The Hill’s story began in 1765, when a German immigrant purchased land near the Wissahickon Creek and named it “Erdenheim,” meaning “Earthly Home.” Over the years, Erdenheim Farm passed through a succession of owners, including the Dixon and McCausland families. In 2001, they sold a portion of the farm to The Hill at Whitemarsh. Today, Erdenheim Farm occupies 450 acres, including a beautifully manicured orchard and a large greenhouse. Its preservation is the product of an extraordinary collaboration among The Hill, The Whitemarsh Foundation, the Dixon and McCausland families, community organizations, governmental agencies and numerous area residents. Their efforts have succeeded in protecting the Farm from further development, maintaining its serene views, and continuing its agricultural activities. The farm is one of the last sanctuaries of pastoral life within the greater Philadelphia area and The Hill is fortunate to have it as its neighbor.
