The Cottages at Hearthstone

The Cottages was recognized by Environments for Aging with a 2015 Design Showcase Award of Merit and the 2015 IIDA Northland Chapter FAB Award in healthcare. This innovative community –– the first of its kind in Iowa –– aims to transform the aging experience by focusing on abilities while encouraging residents to live life to the fullest. The Cottages provide a place to call home with an emphasis on healthy living, independence, and dignity. The role of team members is blended more than in traditional settings, encouraging development of deeper relationships with residents. The open layout and natural light of The Cottages helps strengthen mind, body, and spirit. At the center of the community is a common area with gathering spaces that can be reserved for parties or special events. The entrance also houses the Hilltop Cafe, serving residents, their families, and the community. Down the hall is a sun-filled atrium with plants, including tulips, maintained by the local garden club. Branching off the main entryway, the six small households feature their own decor and color scheme. Even the exterior and rooflines of each cottage are unique. Artwork lining the walls has been donated by local residents and highlight Pella’s Dutch heritage. Each cottage is also named after provinces in the Netherlands. They include Zuid Holland, Groningen and Gelderland — household living; Zeeland — assisted living memory support; Noord Holland — household living memory support; and Friesland — assisted living. Individual cottages have open floor plans, with a family-style dining area and kitchen where residents can watch and smell meals being prepared by a homemaker. As part of the PersonFirst holistic model of care, residents wake up and eat when they want and choose their own food, clothing and activities. The small households also have their own fireplace, living room, family room/library and sun rooms. Memory support cottages also have access to a secured patio.
